The Federation sends in a second operative named Nathan Spencer to rescue Super Joe and assist him in completing his mission. During his mission, Joe is captured by Imperial forces. When the Federation learns of the Empire's plot, they send in their national hero, Super Joe to infiltrate the Empire. Killt, Generalissimo of the Empire's forces, decides to complete the project himself. It begins with the Imperial forces discovering classified documents regarding the development of a secret weapon known as the Albatros project, originally started by an organization known as the Badds, but never completed. Rearmed centers around two warring factions: the Federation and the Empire. However, as is the case in the original, the final boss of the game still clearly resembles Adolf Hitler, and is referred to as "The Leader". In keeping with the North American release of that version, the references to the Nazi party found in the original Japanese title are not featured in Rearmed. 20 years after the 8-bit classic was released, Bionic Commando Rearmed recreates the world of the original with a complete "2.5D" visual revamp.īionic Commando Rearmed borrows its plot largely from the Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game. Its design is irreverent and loveable.Classic side-scrolling gameplay is reporting back for duty with Bionic Commando Rearmed, a remake of the classic NES game, out now on PC. Rearmed is a game where the hero wears shades into battle, surfs through levels on big purple globs of slime and shoots a chained hook from his arm.
Guards look like Prince%26rsquo s backing band, while each area, scrolling along left to right (and up and down), has a neat semi-3D appearance.
Getting into the game proper and the immediate draw is the slick animation of Spencer and the colourful ambience of each level. It%26rsquo s one of the only games this side of MGS4 whose intro screen we%26rsquo ve watched all the way through. From start to end, it%26rsquo s a meticulously crafted homage to what made the NES original so much fun %26ndash and that%26rsquo s the keyword, fun. Even when we were groaning at its occasional trickier moments, the good feeling shines through.
Rearmed succeeds because we couldn%26rsquo t help smiling all the way through it. Spencer has a ginger bouffant for godsakes.
